The documentary work runs beside the fiction rather than underneath it, and it feeds it.
History, true accounts, major figures and events: the same research that supports a novel often turns out to be a subject in its own right, with people still alive who remember it first-hand. Recording that properly has a deadline that has nothing to do with our production schedule.
We treat these as separate commissions with their own standards of evidence. A documentary that borrows the licence of a drama is not a documentary, and a drama that hides behind the authority of a documentary is worse.
